Stowe Mountaing Lodge

The eastern ski regions of the United States have never been known for having luxurious accommodations.  The Stowe Mountain Lodge has changed that.  The lodge was opened in June of 2008 and is actually a fractional ownership condo and hotel complex. Every detail has been thought at this new and exciting alternative to the Rockies for finicky east coast skiers.

The lobby is spacious and inviting.  Arriving guests walk across floors of beautiful "rain forest" polished marble which, in this setting, look more like the native birch-and-hemlock groves which line the ski trails outside the door. The upper level of the lobby area has comfortable couches and chairs and a gas fireplace which, in the winter, is a welcoming island of warmth as guests step in the door. Many of them are inclined to sit and relax.

The second floor houses the excellent restaurant, Solstice, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is good enough to compete with any restaurants in Stowe—an area noted for its fine dining.

Also on the second floor are 139 owned condo units which are available for rent like any hotel room. Each studio and suite has a gas fireplace, the cookware in the kitchens is Calphalon, and the gas stoves are Miele. Baths have a glass-enclosed showers, a deep soaking tub, and bath towels as big, fluffy and white as a powder-covered ski slope.

The other two floors are private residences for share owners. No one owns a specific unit but rather the right to use units on a rotating basis, somewhat like a timeshare. These owners have their own concierge service and are well insulated from the rest of the hotel. The whole setup is luxurious—the level of detail and of service is remarkable.

There's a spa in one wing (guests recommend the hot river stone massage) with a sparkling clean health club, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and outdoor heated pool.

Once guests step outside the hotel, they are steps away from the ski slopes of Stowe. The Spruce Peak base area has changed drastically since 2006. In addition to the hotel (which dominates the base area), there's a new base lodge (opened December 2008), a couple of new high-speed quads on Spruce Peak itself, and a reconfigured trail system that's designed for beginners.

If the challenge of Mount Mansfield and fabled runs like the Front Four and the powder lines off the chin are more to your liking, the new "Over Easy" gondola sails you across Route 108 from Spruce to Mansfield in just minutes; it is more convenient than a shuttle.

Just down the road (shuttle service is available) are the cross-country and snowshoe trails of Stowe's Nordic Center. Three other Nordic trail systems are nearby as well.

When the snow goes, guests are a long tee shot from the Stowe Mountain Club, a new course that has been named one of the "Top 10 New Courses You Can Play" by Golf Magazine. In spring, summer and fall there are miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and excellent fly fishing opportunities.

This new hotel is the top pick for luxury in Stowe.  Within hours of making a reservation at the Stowe Mountain Lodge, you'll get an email from the Alpine Concierge asking if you need help booking spa services, lift tickets or tee times, equipment rentals, or dining reservations. The service gets even better from there.
