This stately grand deluxe hotel boasts a prime position right on the beach in the middle of Santa Monica. Known as a more traditional hotel, a recent renovation has brought in some more contemporary touches. The hip Veranda Bar & Lounge is one of the places to enjoy cocktails at the end of another perfect California day. On Wednesday’s blues and jazz singers perform. The restaurant, which used to be a more formal affair, caters to a more relaxed but still well dressed crowd. Sunday Brunch is very popular so advance reservations are a must.

At Casa del Mar, guests enter the hotel through the brick and stained-glass facade of the hotel's street side, even though the beach side with its jutting rotunda and arched windows is much grander. Once inside, arrivals pass through a foyer with painted ceilings and mosaic floors. Twin staircases loop up to the magnificent multilevel lobby and reception area, which take up most of the floor. The room is superbly realized in the manor of a grand chateau, with fruitwood paneling and gilt inlay, a coffered ceiling and a double-sided fireplace.

Guest rooms are very comfortable and are decorated in pale fruity colors and appointed with an eclectic mix of furnishings which include armchairs, sofas or upholstered chaise lounges, and duvets and lush linens on new pillow-top beds. Plantation shutters and sheer white drapes provide privacy, and splashes of Asian and contemporary art add interest.

Standard fittings include desks or tables with dual-line phones, plasma TVs and DVDs, and minibars. Most rooms now have iPod docks as well. The exquisite baths showcase white marble surfaces, frosted-glass windows, robes, slippers, stall showers and elaborate hydrotherapy whirlpool tubs with 17 jets and 10 settings. In some units, shutters open between baths and bedrooms to admit natural light into the former. Some rooms on the fifth floor have patios, and many offer sea views through arched windows. The three penthouse suites are on two levels.
