Castello del Nero

Castello del Nero is midway between Florence and Siena, in a remarkable setting surveying Chianti's rolling hills and near some of the region's most celebrated wineries. The well-equipped destination Espa spa offers savvy sybarites a rare opportunity to be massaged, manicured and rejuvenated in a restored 12th-century castle.

Castello del Nero is a former royal retreat with a historic heart that is surrounded by modern additions, cypress and olive groves. Most of the public areas keep a period demeanor that will please traditionalists, though there are enough modern accents to delight urbanites. (This is not a stuffy, armor-filled castle by any means.)

The guest rooms are lovely but here it is the suites that you want to book.  They are all fabulous. They have grand architectural detail, undulating walls, burnished beams, boiseries and frescoes.  The roomy baths are layered with marble, mostly dual vanities, separate showers and deep soaking tubs.  Monogrammed slippers and robes are a nice touch, and the spa-quality toiletries, bidets, towel warmers and magnifying mirrors are a nice touch.

The lobby sets the tone with its formal yet efficient staff, rustic yet noble arches and fine array of period furnishings in fittingly regal red hues. The designers have done a good job of eliciting an elegant residential tone while still maintaining a sense of glamour. Views of Tuscany's classic olive-dappled hills and swaying vineyards abound from nearly every room.

The grounds of Castello del Nero are, in fact,  a working farm that the chef takes full advantage of.  The restaurant not only focuses its views on the groves of olives but it also utilizes the trees' rich oil and garden herbs in its delicious Tuscan dishes. Set in the castle's former stables, the restaurant is a landmark for locals as well as in-house guests. In fair weather the terrace creates the most inviting setting.

Light fare and drinks are also delivered poolside. The evocative bar is secreted away in what was once the ancient kitchen. Service is very good, prices steep. Despite the appearance of being a castaway refuge, guests need only drive a few minutes to reach a number of quaint trattorias.

For most arrivals, the heart of this hotel is the Espa spa.  Espa spa’s are now well known by sophisticated travelers and here it really lives up to its reputation. Set in a separate, well-disguised structure, it is a spacious and luxurious facility graced with a long roster of health and beauty treatments, segregated men's and women's sections, saunas, hydrotherapies, massage, manicures, pedicures and even life consultants. The owner's olive trees are in use here too, with a number of treatments utilizing freshly squeezed oils and tinctures culled from the surrounding fields.

The more traditional lap pool is large. It is situated on a bluff that creates its own drama, and the surrounding furnished deck is primed for photo-ops of the dreamy Tuscan countryside. The two lighted tennis courts are well maintained, nearby golf can be arranged, and guests can rent bicycles for exploring the region.
