Blanket Bay

The stunning Blanket Bay and American-owned property 40 minutes south of Queenstown creates the feel of a late-19th-century Rocky Mountain lodge in 9-meter-high beamed ceilings, handcrafted oak doors, slate floors and roaring stone fireplaces. It fits seamlessly into the dramatic New Zealand landscape. Food plays almost as big a part as the setting here, and guests should be prepared for a memorable culinary experience.

The drive to Blanket Bay is pretty spectacular as well as it is along one the most spectacular stretches of the Alps. When you do arrive the ambiance of the great room which dominates the main building features a gigantic flagstone fireplace, antique furniture, hunting trophies and a deer-antler chandelier.
The adjoining furnished terrace overlooking the lake, though, is why people (including many international celebrities) absolutely want to spend the night here. At sunset it is a pleasure just to gaze out at the lake and sample the hotel's wonderful cellar. A wood-trimmed bar skirts the main lounge area, and the den features a pool table, card tables, darts, table shuffleboard, a big-screen TV and an honor bar. An adjacent map room helps guests plan their journeys. The main dining room has individual settings, daily changing menus and yet another grand fireplace, and balcony dining by candlelight affords exquisite lake views.

A small gym, steam rooms, a whirlpool and a heated outdoor lap pool are on-site, and complimentary mountain biking, horseback riding and canoeing are more options. The fishing boat moored to the private jetty is available for guided charter.

Rooms, suites and chalets provide top accommodations, featuring splendidly rustic decor with designer accents. All provide TVs with movies, fully stocked minibars, data ports, high-speed Internet access, robes, heated towel rails, hair dryers and irons. Rooms have king-size beds and balconies, and baths feature granite-topped vanities, claw-foot tubs and stall showers. Suites boast log-burning fireplaces, walk-in closets, steam showers and large private terraces. The two schist stone and timber chalets consist of suites sharing a common living room.
One room is wheelchair-accessible, children younger than 13 are excluded and a no-smoking policy is in force.
