The Farm at Cape Kidnappers

Set amidst 6,000 acres of untouched natural wilderness in New Zealand, Cape Kidnappers is an outdoorsman’s paradise.  But with luxurious accommodations, a wealth of nearby vineyards, the world’s 27th best golf course, and an on-site spa, you certainly won’t have to ‘rough it’ while you’re staying at this destination, the quintessential blend of rustic splendor and sophistication.

The accommodations consist of a handful of cottages that are spread out over the vast 6,000 acre property, positioning Cape Kidnappers as one of the world’s premier destinations for seclusion and privacy.  These well-appointed cottages offer enchanting views of the working farmgolf course, and Pacific Ocean from private balconies.  The spacious rooms feature high ceilings, large windows, and French doors.  These gorgeous suites, all totara wood and elegant stone, are launched into the next level of luxury by the small touches that the designers thoughtfully added, like heated towel racks, remote-controlled air conditioning, and the fact that the fully stocked mini bar is complimentary.  The ‘Signature Suite’ is the owner’s cottage, which is resplendent in blonde totara wood, elegant granite, and local New Zealand artwork.  The owner’s cottage contains a magnificent fireplace, walk-in closets, and multiple balconies plus a stone terrace with a lavish patio, outdoor Jacuzzi, and of course the requisite Pacific vistas.

Golfers will be delighted by the par-71 course that sprawls out over 7,119 verdant yards at Cape Kidnappers.  Designed by Tom Doak, this course is ranked 27th in the world.  The first half leads you through a fully functioning farm, complete with rolling green hills, red barns and even grazing families of sheep.  The course then leads you out to dramatic seaside cliffs, where the greens are literally suspended above the bay on breathtaking 500-foot cliffs.  You don’t have to worry about crowded links at this remote course: James A. Frank of Golf Connoisseur writes that “From the main gate it’s a 20 minute drive- through forest, cattle farm, and hilly hairpin turns- up to the barn-like clubhouse that sits alone on top of a bluff.”  Designed in Doak’s trademark minimalist fashion, in which he uses the land’s natural obstacles to craft a challenging course, this secluded course is a unique golfing treasure.

Perhaps the only people who will be more excited than the golf enthusiasts will be the nature lovers.  Guests at Cape Kidnappers have the chance to take part in a very special activity with kiwi expert Dr. John McLennan and his team, who will guide small groups on their Kiwi radio tracking and monitoring missions, which gives you the chance to get up close with one of the world’s rarest and most interesting birds.  These shy, flightless birds are only found in New Zealand, and have a number of unique traits, like the ability to hunt for insects underground using their keen sense of smell, and the fact that they usually mate with the same partner for their whole lives.  The hotel’s owner, Julian Roberts, a New Yorker by birth and a New Zealander by heart, is a noted philanthropist and caring environmentalist, and he is dedicated to restoring this lovable animal to its natural environment, introducing a dozen new kiwis to the resort since it opened.    Fishing fanatics will also be right at home at Kidnapper’s Cape - the Mohaka, Tutkuir, Ngaruroro, Waipawa, and Tukituki rivers all run through the property, and all are filled with rainbow and wild brown trout.  An experienced local guide will pick you up on a four wheeler and take you to one of Cape Kidnapper’s 20 lakes and streams.  If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, a true wilderness fishing experience utilizing a helicopter that will take you to remote rivers and streams can be arranged.  Explore and enjoy the 6,000 acres of Cape Kidnappers on a mountain bike, on an all-terrain vehicle, or on foot.  Hike through the ancient Kahikatea trees in the unspoiled woodlands, or watch the 20,000 birds called gannets interact in their natural environment; Cape Kidnappers is home to the largest gannet colony in the world.

Take a break from nature’s majesty to sip some of the fine wines that New Zealand has to offer.  In recent years, New Zealand’s profile in the wine world has increased considerably; its cool, temperate climate make it the perfect place to grow both sauvignon blanc and pinot noir.  Thus, there are a lot of excellent, emerging vineyards here and many of them will be happy to give you a behind the scenes tour, and of course, a tasting.  Sample the best that Elephant Hill Estate and Winery has to offer at this lush vineyard on the Te Awanga coast that’s cooled by refreshing afternoon sea breezes.  As an added bonus, you can enjoy first rate cuisine, created specifically to complement the wines, at the vineyard’s restaurant, which is located on a sleek, modern terrace that hangs out over the Pacific Ocean.  Try one of the Bordeaux-style reds at either Clearview Estate or Alpha Domus- They’re so good that even the most discriminating wine critic could be forgiven for thinking that they’re from France.  Syrah aficionados will love Bridge Pa, a vineyard built over deep Taupo pumice and gravel that devotes one hundred percent of its effort and property towards cultivating this savoury, peppery grape.  Other highlights in the esteemed Hawke’s Bay wine region include CJ Pask WineryHatton Estate Vineyard and Winery, and Black Barn Vineyards, and more.  With such a bounty of quality vineyards, you can sip to your heart’s content while at Cape Kidnappers.

The icing on the cake here is the Cape Kidnappers spa, which is located on the hillside above the lodge with amazing views across the valley towards the sea, the pine forests, and the snow covered Mount Ruapehu.  Enjoy decadent treatments like the Earth Stone Massage, which uses heated New Zealand volcanic stones to relax and massage your muscles.  Or try the Jade and Crystal Facial which uses warm bloodstone and cooling jade to encourage circulation and enable the healing properties of the spa’s products to penetrate deeply into the skin.  Don’t miss the Rescue Wrap, which will revive your senses with aromatic sea salt exfoliation, followed by a steam shower.

Whether you’re observing nature at its finest, driving a golf ball on a seaside cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific, tasting a refreshing sauvignon blanc at one of the many nearby vineyards, or simply taking advantage of the gorgeous setting by picnicking outside, Cape Kidnappers is the best luxury resort in New Zealand to visit for a truly unique and memorable travel experience
