While other hotels have come and gone in this city of constant change, The luxury hotel Plaza Athenee New York has consistently maintained its special stature. The Plaza Athenee New York is a boutique, European-style hotel nestled among the residences of the fashionable East Side of Manhattan, on a quiet, tree-lined street. While it’s located in a tranquil, leafy oasis, its still just a short stroll from Central Park, the world class shopping of Madison Avenue, and all of the glamour and glitz associated with Manhattan.
The 152 newly-renovated guestrooms and suites at the Plaza Athenee New York are decorated in warm European fabrics, and many feature their own private balconies and/or indoor atriums. The ambiance is that of an elegant home with fine furnishings. The comfortable beds are outfitted with Belgian linens, and the hotel even offers a pillow menu so you can select exactly what kind of pillow you want to use. Furniture is made from cherrywood with rich carvings. Flat-screen televisions, gilded wall clocks, and bowls of potpourri round out the list of extravagant features. Complimentary services include twice daily maid service, tea and coffee in the morning, and shoeshine service.
The crown jewel of the five star Plaza Athenee New York is the 1,972 square-foot duplex Penthouse Suite, located on the sixteenth and seventeenth floors. From the large marble foyer a curving staircase leads to the second floor of the penthouse. Here, guests will find a romantically-decorated bedroom that connects to a sun-drenched indoor atrium with rattan furniture. A planted private terrace, exclusively for your use, runs half the length of the hotel. There’s also an office nook, a dining room that can accommodate up to twelve guests, and a decorative marble fireplace.
Zagat called Arabelle, the Plaza Athenee’s restaurant, “One of the top restaurants in New York City,” while Gayot went even further, naming it “One of the top restaurants in the world.” Housed in an elegant gold-domed room with murano glass and brass chandaliers, Arabelle features a seasonal menu focused on the highest quality goods from local and certified organic farms. Try the marinated, all-natural Amish chicken breast or the grilled dry-aged Niman Ranch sirloin steak. Furthermore, the Sunday brunch here, featuring a buffet of steamed lobster, chilled shrimp, salads, and sliced meats is second to none.
Meanwhile, some guests may recognize the Plaza Athenee’s stylish bar, Bar Seine, from Sex and the City’s second to last episode. The amber-lit Bar Seine lounge mixes European, Moroccan, African, and Asian artwork and furnishings with red velvet curtains, Moroccan olive jars, red lacquered walls, onyx sconces, animal-print fabrics, and leather floors. This upscale but intimate lounge serves up a unique selection of drinks, including its signature ‘crystal cosmopolitan.’ Needless to say, the cocktail hour here always seems to attract an interesting crowd; New Yorker’s included. The laptops available for use at the bar are a nice touch.
In terms of fitness, the Plaza Athenee offers guests the option of using its own small fitness center, or complimentary use of some of the bigger gyms and health clubs in the neighborhood. Than again, you might just want to go down the block for a jog through Central Park.
The Plaza Athenee New York is only a block away from Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue, two of the world’s most vaunted shopping strips. Stores like Giorgio Armani, Hermes, Barney’s, J Mandel, Carolina Herrera, and Louis Vuitton are all within a stone’s throw of the hotel. Cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are also nearby.
