The Lodge at Torrey Pines

The family-owned and staffed The Lodge at Torrey Pines was built as a tribute to the California Craftsman movement. Modeled after two Craftsman-style masterpiece houses in Pasadena, this resort hearkens back to a pre-Hollywood California, a time when true craftsmanship hadn't yet been eclipsed by the stage-set mentality. This is immediately apparent in the hotel's construction, a post-and-beam structure with a its brick foundation, metal strap and wedge joinery, and lots of stained glass. This is one of the finest resort in La Jolla and San Diego.  Some like to compare it to the Montage in Laguna Beach, but this is overall a superior hotel, with quality in construction that exceeds its competitors throughout the southland.

The huge porte cochere, manned by a squadron of bellstaff, including kilt-clad valets, is supported by an impressive brick-and-cobblestone stanchion. The lobby features a lofty vaulted wood ceiling from which hang four art-deco lamps over a series of rockers, wingbacks and Stickley ebony-pegged armchairs. A giant hearth and classical music lend atmosphere, and the views of the pool, golf course and ocean complete the setting.

Dining is in two restaurants. A.R. Valentien, the signature restaurant, is in a room of brown banquettes and booths highlighted by impressionist artwork of the eponymous painter, and by Chef Jeff Jackson's cooking style: basic ingredients, minimal handling and big portions. The second dining area features outdoor seating amid the pine trees, an exhibition kitchen and a more casual bistro cuisine that includes everything from drugstore hamburgers to braised lamb shank. Flat-screen TVs take the place of paintings here and in the clubby bar.

Outdoors is the elegant pool with underwater music, and a whirlpool is set in a wood deck close enough to the greens that bathers can critique golfers' swings. The gym is well-equipped, and the luxurious spa emphasizes the holistic practices of Aboriginal people. (Guests undergo rituals as well as treatments.) The 14 spa treatment rooms are supplemented by an herbal-infused steam room and dry sauna. Guests can play Bocce ball or croquet on their respective fields and go on nature walks in the adjoining Torrey Pines State Reserve.

The hotel sits on the 18th green of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, the site of the 2008 U.S. Open.  The concierge staff can arrange for tee times here, as well as at more than a dozen area courses. The business center is open 24 hours, and the largest ballroom, capable of hosting 450 guests, is divisible into three smaller rooms.

Standard rooms, at 520 sq ft, are large.  They may lack water vistas, but they are spacious enough to entertain guests on a rainy day. All of the units are realized in a faithful Arts and Crafts style with furnishings mimicking renowned Stickley pieces. Each features wooden-slat headboards a la Frank Lloyd Wright, chairs and chaise longues with inlaid Arts and Crafts motifs, and carpeting and fabrics in period-authentic William Morris designs. The brocade spreads and leather cushions on the settees continue the quality look, accented by California impressionist artwork. Baths are a highlight with brick-weave marble floors, granite counters, deep soaking tubs and period chrome fittings. The more expensive Palisade rooms have the best views, facing west toward the ocean and sunset. (These rooms also come with separate marble showers.) Less expensive Signature rooms have limited views. Staff and service run at high levels here, as this hotel inspires enthusiasm.

Nonstop room service, turndown and twice-daily maid service are provided. Well-to-do golfers, hikers, and spa aficionados are the main clientele at one of San Diego's most deluxe oceanfront resorts.
