Hesperia Madrid

The mountain's worth of marble glistening in the lobby is visible all the way across traffic-clogged Paseo de la Castellana on a clear day. Bold, oversized lattice dividers provide interesting transitions between many of the common rooms. Calm, professional receptionists handle their duties with clockwork efficiency. The adjacent lounge gives its hardworking pianist a break four days a week, replacing him with a harpist Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Along with a collection of contemporary art, stonework and architectural fragments grace public rooms.

Dining continues to draw powerbrokers thanks to chef Santi Santamaria, whose other interests include the fabled El Raco de Can Fabes. He is in charge of the New Spanish menu and the impressive list of Iberian wines offered at lunch and dinner in the Santceloni restaurant. Reservations are recommended. La Manzana, the casual open-plan restaurant, offers hearty buffets and a la carte service at all meals. Notable for its long list of single-malt Scotches, the Scotch Piano Bar now considers its holdings to be the most bountiful in Spain, and reasonable prices enable enthusiasts to sample more than just a wee dram.

Alabaster sconces throw soft shadows on the wide corridors upstairs. The smell of fresh-cut flowers permeates the halls 24 hours a day.

Accommodations compete strongly in this market, with plush soft goods and elaborate window treatments. Custom furniture includes large desks, inlaid armoires, oversized wingback chairs and padded headboards. Sitting areas have breakfast tables, and appointments run to thermostats, dual-line phones with data ports, Internet access, minibars, safes, and good storage space with slippers.Wireless Internet access free. The well-designed but small marble baths pack in robes, hair dryers, Bulgari toiletries and magnifying mirrors. The 14 junior suites boast vast interiors, superior decor, romantic platform beds.  Everyone gets fruit and flowers on arrival, housekeeping makes twice-daily rounds, and room service never stops.

Some floors and almost all public areas as designated smoke-free. Two rooms are set up for disabled guests. The occasional diamond-collared canine can be seen traipsing the halls here. The patient staff speaks perfect English and is willing to meet your every demand. This standout hotel has proven to rank among the best.
