There is only one hotel of consequence in Sorrento and that is Grand Hotel Cocumella. As the town of Sorrento is one of legends so is Cocumella to Sorrento. One only has to walk through their park like gardens or visit their private chapel to experience a small part of the history this unique property possesses. Additionally their views of the Bay of Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius are inspiring enough to spark any romantic. Take the afternoon by the pool under the orange trees reading and maybe before cocktails a game of tennis. The hotel also provides a full gym. We want to make it clear, however, this is not the hotel for everyone nor does it pretend to be. It retains a low key but refined atmosphere not usually experienced today. In this sense it is like going back in time when Europeans of a certain class and sophistication summered here and understood the concept of relaxation. Having said that the owner, Dr. Lionello del Papa, is a young man who seems to exemplify the modern version of this era along with a marvelous zest for life. His presence is such that if he is in residence you will probably be aware of it and if the opportunity arises, do meet him. He is a distinct part of the hotel and just as charming.
